Sophomore Jamie Lovemark, freshman Matthew Giles and junior Tom Glissmeyer all fired sub-70 rounds to lead the No. 7 USC men's golf team to fourth after the first day of the 18-team, 54-hole UH-Hilo Intercollegiate at the Waikoloa (Hawaii) G.C. on Wednesday (Feb. 6).
USC finished with a combined 6-under 274, three strokes behind leaders Arizona State and Texas Tech. Oregon State was third (273) while Stanford and Georgia Tech were tied for fifth (275).
Lovemark turned in a USC season-low 66 to tie for fourth individually, two shots back of Sun Devil leader Stephan Gross (64). His previous low this season was a 68.
Giles, an Australian who enrolled at USC in the spring semester, debuted as a Trojan with a 68 (tied for 13th) while Glissmeyer turned in a season-best effort 69 (tied for 20th). Glissmeyer's previous low this season was 70.
Sophomore Rory Hie is tied for 36th after a first-round 71 while freshman Tim Sluiter is tied for 76th after an opening effort of 74.
