Playing through gusty winds and temperatures in the low 40s, the No. 6 USC men's golf team battled to a tie for fourth place after the first round of the 2008 U.S. Collegiate Championship in Alpharetta, Ga., on Monday (March 24) at the Golf Club of Georgia's Lakeside Course.

The Trojans, who shared the links with eight of the nation's top 11 ranked team, combined for a 6-over 294, five shots behind No. 4 UCLA (289). Florida State is second (291), Oklahoma State is third (292) while USC is tied with East Tennessee State and Alabama in fourth.

Freshmen Matthew Giles and Tim Sluiter led USC on Monday and are tied for 10th (72, E) and 16th (73, +1), respectively. Giles knocked in three birdies on the day while Sluiter had four, including two on his final two holes to get within a stroke of par.

Sophomore Jamie Lovemark tied for 24th at 2-over 74 while sophomore Rory Hie is tied for 30th at 3-over 75. Lovemark opened his round with three consecutive birdies, but couldn't generate another. Hie birdied twice.
