Sugimoto Leads Trojans To Open The Goodwin

    Senior Eric Sugimoto carded a 70 to lead the No. 9 USC men's golf team on the first day of The Goodwin at 10-over on Thursday at the Stanford (Calif.) G.C.

    The Trojans are tied for 20th after 18 holes of the three-day event. TCU, at -16, is in first.

    Sugimoto had two birdies, including on 18, against two pars for his even round, good for a tie for 36th.

    Junior Bobby Gojuangco is tied for 66th at 2-over 72 while senior Paul Smith is tied for 78th at 3-over 73.

    It hasn't happened much this season, but both of USC's top two players struggled during the same round as sophomore Rico Hoey is tied for 103rd at 5-over 75 while freshman Sean Crocker is tied for 115th at 6-over 76.

    Freshman Jonah Texeira, playing individually, is tied for 51st at 1-over 71.

    Play continues Friday and Saturday. The Trojans tee off in the second wave Friday, first off at 12:15 p.m.
