Hoey Leads Trojans In NCAA Sugar Grove Regional Second Round|

Freshman Rico Hoey fired a 2-under 70 while junior Anthony Paolucci carded his second straight 1-over 73 as the No. 16 USC men's golf team finished the second round of the NCAA Championships Regional at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., in fifth on Friday (May 16).
USC, seeking its eighth consecutive trip to the NCAA final, sits at combined 18-over 594 (302-292), 10 back of second-round leader UAB and nine behind Illinois. Clemson is third at 15-over while the region's top seed, California, is fourth at 17-over. Purdue is sixth at 21-over while Jacksonville State and Kent State are tied for seventh at 32-over.
The start of the second round was delayed by two-and-a-half hours due to inclement weather.
Five teams in each NCAA regional - three with 13 teams and three with 14 teams -- and the low individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championship final, hosted by Wichita State, May 23-28, in Hutchinson, Kan.
Hoey moved into a tie for second at 1-over 145 (75-70) with a strong second round that included a 1-over front 9 and a 3-under back 9 which featured birdies on 11, 14, and 17. He is six back of leader Brian Campbell of Campbell (5-under 139).
Paolucci, USC's leader Thursday, is tied for 10th at 2-over 146 (73-73). He was 1-over on the front with a birdie on 6 and a double bogey on 8. He finished with a birdie on 17 and a bogey on 18.
Junior Paul Smith is tied for 21st at 6-over 150 (75-75) and had four birdies on the day, two on each 9. Senior Jeffrey Kang is tied for 33rd at 9-over 153 (79-74) while junior Eric Sugimoto is tied for 45th at 13-over 157 (81-76). Kang had three birdies today while Sugimto had one. He was even through 11 before going 4-over on the final seven holes.
