USC Nears Finish Of NCAA Championships Third Round

    May 25, 2014

Another day of the 2014 NCAA Championships came and went with another bout of weather delays in tow and the No. 22 USC men's golf team - with half the third round finished -- are tied for 28th after play was stopped Sunday (May 25) at the Prairie Dunes C.C. in Hutchinson, Kan.

USC freshman Rico Hoey leads Troy at 5-over after nine holes of the third round and is tied for 81st. As a team, the Trojans are a combined 37-over after a first-round 16-over 296, a second-round 18-over 298 and a 3-over in today's partial round.

The Trojans, playing in the bottom half of the 30-team bracket, will resume playing at 5:30 a.m. PT Monday.

Per the NCAA: "Weather permitting, the 15 teams and three individuals will attempt to complete the third-round in a limited time window tomorrow. If unable to do so, all scores in round three would be declared null and void and round three will be repaired to include only teams 1-15 and the six low individuals not on those teams (based on non-sudden death tie breaking procedures) to determine the eight teams for match play and the individual champion on Monday, with Golf Channel providing coverage beginning at 11 a.m. PT."

Hoey is 5-over overall after first two rounds of 68 and 77 and even play today. Junior Eric Sugimoto (76-73, +1 in third round with an eagle and a birdie) is tied for 122nd while junior Anthony Paolucci (76-74, +2 in round three) is tied for 131st.

Junior Paul Smith is tied for 139th (76-74, 5-over in round three) while senior Jeffrey Kang (77-80, even in round three) is tied for 148th.

The eight-team match-play tournament is scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday.
