Crocker Leads No. 2 USC In Season-Opening Round At Olympia Fields|
Sept. 16, 2016
Junior Sean Crocker fired a 1-under 69 to lead a challenging season-opening round for the No. 2 USC men’s golf team at the OFCC/Fighting Illini Invite on Friday (Sept. 16) at the Olympia Fields C.C. North Course.
The Trojans finished the first 18 holes in a three-way tie for 10th at 16-over 296, one of 13 teams at least 7-over par after the first round. Host Illinois, a fellow 2016 NCAA semifinalist with USC, leads at 6-under 284 while Texas A&M is second at par 280. Texas, the third of the four NCAA semifinalists playing in this event, is tied for sixth at 14-over 294.
Crocker led the Trojans with his 1-under round, good for a tie for sixth, four back of a two-way tie for first. Crocker, starting on 10, was 1-under going out and got to 3-under through 13 holes before finishing with a 69.
Crocker’s 69 gives him three straight season-opening rounds under 70 after a 69 last year at the Husky Invitational and a 68 at the Southwestern Intercollegiate to kick off his freshman season. He is the only Trojan over the last three season openers to break 70.
Fellow junior Jonah Texeira is tied for 40th at 5-over 75 after a two-birdie round. Senior Rico Hoey and freshman Cheng Jin are tied for 49th at 6-over 76 and senior Andrew Levitt is tied for 67th at 8-over 78.
USC will continue play Saturday in the second round with Alabama and Indiana, beginning at 8:45 a.m. CT.
