    Nov. 3, 2014

Senior Paul Smith carded a 4-under 67 to lead the No. 18 USC men's golf team into first place after the first round of the Gifford Collegiate at Cordevalle in San Martin, Calif., on Monday (Nov. 3).

The Trojans, in the six-player, count-five format, combined for a 2-under 353 and are two ahead of second-place No. 8 UCLA, six better than third-place No. 4 Texas. USC is coming off a win in its previous event (the Bill Cullum Invitational) and looking for its fourth top 2 finish in five fall events.

Smith, looking for his first top 10 this year, is third with his 67, one back of the lead. He turned in six birdies on the day, including on 17 and 18. It was his third round in the 60s this season.

Freshman Sean Crocker, already with two top 4 finishes this year, turned in his team-best seventh sub-70 round with a 2-under 69 to tie for seventh with a three-birdie day. Senior Eric Sugimoto is tied for 10th at 1-under 70, which also included birdies on 17 and 18.

Freshman Jonah Texeira is tied for 26th at 2-over 73, sophomore Rico Hoey is tied for 31st at 3-over 74 and junior Bobby Gojuangco is tied for 54th at 6-over 77. Sophomore Danny Ochoa, playing as an individual, is tied for 62nd at 7-over 78.

USC returns to action tomorrow, beginning at 9:36 a.m.
