USC Beats Wisconsin, Northwestern, Moves To Gifford Title Match

    Senior Rico Hoey, junior Jonah Texeira and sophomore Justin Suh each won two matches while senior Andrew Levitt, junior Sean Crocker and freshman Cheng Jin won one match apiece as the No. 12 USC men’s golf team posted quarterfinal and semifinal victories on the second day of the Gifford Collegiate at the Silverado Resort and Spa’s North Course in Napa, Calif., on Tuesday (Nov. 8).

    The Trojans downed Wisconsin, 5-0-1, and dispatched of Northwestern, 4-2. USC, which earned the top seed in the eight-team match play bracket after dominating 36 holes of stroke play on Monday, is looking for its second straight win after claiming the Cypress Point Classic last week.

    USC will face the winner of the Stanford-Washington semifinals.

    Hoey clinched the win and the move into the championship final by downing Northwestern’s Ryan Lumsden, 3&1. That followed Texeira’s win as the junior fought back from a tie on 17 by winning 18. Suh led for his entire back 9 while Jin led for all but the first hole.

    Troy dominated the quarterfinal match, trailing after only two holes in its five winning matches over the Badgers. Jin was the only Trojan down in his match, but he came back late to finish squared up.
