Crocker, Hoey Listed Among First 2017 Palmer Cup Rankings|
Feb. 9, 2017
A day after making an appearance on the first 2017 Ben Hogan Award Watch List, USC senior Rico Hoey and junior Sean Crocker were both in the top 20 of the newly released 2017 Arnold Palmer Cup Rankings announced Thursday (Feb. 9).
This is the first of three spring rankings set ahead of the 2017 matches to be held June 9-11 at Atlanta Athletic Club. Additional rankings will be released Feb. 23 and March 9. The 10 person teams for both Europe and the United States will be announced March 16 during the first round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational presented by MasterCard.
Crocker is ranked fifth while Hoey is 19th on the American top 20 chart. Crocker leads USC in stroke average at 70.00 and has five top 16 finishes in as many starts this season, including three in the top 10. He has seven rounds under 70 and is a combined 17-under in his last four outings, 16-under on the year.
Hoey has represented the U.S. twice at the Palmer Cup, including last summer. He boasts a pair of first-place finishes at the Gifford Collegiate and the Amer Ari Invitational as well as a team-best eight rounds under 70. Sporting a 70.12 stroke average, he has four top 10s, all in his last four events. He is a combined 33-under par in his last eight rounds.
The Arnold Palmer Cup Ranking automatically qualifies the top six players for both sides and uses Golfstat’s NCAA Player Ranking as a base. The ranking awards bonus points for wins and high finishes, penalty for poor finishes, and contains a strength of schedule component. The remaining four players for the United States will be selected using three committee picks and one coaches pick. One of the U.S. committee picks must be a non-Division I golfer. The final four spots on Team Europe shall consist of the champion of The R&A Foundation Scholars Tournament, held in early April, two committee picks and one coaches pick.
