Trojans Sign Prep Standouts Issei Tanabe, Kaito Onishi|

Issei Tanabe, from Huntington Beach, Calif., and Kaito Onishi, from Bradenton, Fla., two top prep players who have played high level junior and amateur golf for years, have signed National Letters of Intent with USC, Trojan Men’s Golf Coach Chris Zambri announced today.
“Each of these players has won many golf tournaments and will bring a winning spirit to our team,” Zambri said of the pair of Japanese golfers. “The Trojan Family and our men’s golf program welcomes them with open arms and we look forward to doing great things together.”
Tanabe, a senior at Mater Dei High in Santa Ana, Calif., became the first Mater Dei player to win the Trinity League championship with 1-under 141 (71-70) as a 2016 junior. In 2015, he won the Toyota Tour Cup Series event at the Carlton Oaks G.C. with a 142 (72-70). He had three 2015 top 15 AJGA finishes, including a fifth at the Rolex Tournament of Champions with a 214 (67-72-75). In 2014, he won the AJGA BBCN Bank Junior Championship at 206 (68-70-68) and was fifth at the L.A. Junior Open.
Onishi, a senior at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Fla., was a 2016 Rolex Junior All-American honorable mention selection and a 2015 Rolex Junior All-American second teamer. He won the 2016 27th Annual Sea Pines Junior Heritage, fighting off severe winds in Hilton Head, S.C., with a 145 (74-71). He tied for third at the 2016 AJGA Haas Family Invitational with a 280 (67-72-67-74), was seventh at the 2016 Terra Cotta Invitational and was eighth at the AJGA TaylorMade-addidas Golf Junior. He reached the round of 64 at the 2016 U.S. Junior Amateur. In 2015, he posted three top 10 junior finishes, including a third at the Western Junior Championship at 282 (74-71-68-69), and he had four top 10s in 2014, including a sixth at the Callaway Junior Championship.
