March 4, 2017
Senior co-captain Steven Stumph became the first Trojan ever to win the 200y breast title three times in a row while sophomore Patrick Mulcare took second in the 200y back to lead USC on the final night of the 2017 Pac-12 Men's Swimming and Diving Championships in Federal Way, Wash., on Saturday.
USC finished third with 657 points. Stanford won the team title with 784 while Cal was second (767). Behind USC, ASU finished fourth (531), Arizona fifth (360) and Utah sixth (257).
Stumph won his third straight 200y breast title with a 1:53.08, fighting off Cal senior Hunter Cobleigh who was second in 1:53.51. Stumph trailed Cobleigh at the 100 but led after 150 and turned with 25 to go with the win in sight.
The only other Trojan who had won the Pac-12 200y breast title twice in a row was Ryosuke Imai in 2000 and 2001. Stumph now owns three of USC's seven victories in the event.
Senior Ridge Altman finished a career-best fourth in the 200y breast in a PR 1:54.04 to become the second-fastest Trojan ever in the race. Freshman Mario Koenigsperger took 12th overall (1:56.18) to move into sixth on USC's top 10 list while sophomore Carsten Vissering, the 100y breast champion, was 14th in 1:56.71.
Mulcare twice broke his school record in the 200y back today en route to second place in the A final a year after he won the title. Squaring up against Cal's Olympic backstroke gold medalist Ryan Murphy, Mulcare first earned top seed out of prelims with a 1:39.44 to lower his 1:39.64 from last year. In the final, he finished second to Murphy but still re-set his Trojan record with a 1:39.37.
Juniors Santo Condorelli and Dylan Carter, both three-time finalists this week like Stumph, completed their strong sessions in the 100y free A final, finishing fifth (42.94) and seventh (43.07), respectively. Junior Ralf Tribuntsov won the B final of the 100y free in 43.13 while sophomore Kyle Grissom won the C final with a PR 44.07.
The Trojans closed the meet as Carter, Condorelli, Tribuntsov and senior co-captain Reed Malone posted a season best in the 400y free relay to finish second in 2:50.37.
USC will compete in the NCAA Championships, March 22-25, in Indianapolis, Ind.
