Malone and Michael Named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week

    March 9, 2016 LOS ANGELES – Junior swimmer Reed Malone and junior attacker Michaela Michael were named USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of Mar. 1-Mar. 8, on Wednesday, Mar. 9.

    USC CREDIT UNION MEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
    Reed Malone won his first two career conference titles at the 2016 Pac-12 Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships last week, leading the Trojans to a second-place finish. He first won the 500y free on Thursday. The junior recorded a 4:15.27 in prelims for the second seed, and won the final in 4:11.80, only 0.50 off his personal best.

    He followed it the next day with his first title in the 200y free with a personal best of 1:33.08. In the 800y free relay, Malone helped the Trojans finish in 6:16.77 to secure second place.

    On the final night of the Pac-12 Championships, Malone made the A final of the 100y free and took eighth in 43.71.

    The Trojans are next scheduled to compete in the NCAA Championships from March 24-26 in Atlanta.

    Also nominated for men's student-athlete of the week: David Oppenheim (baseball) and Lucas Yoder (volleyball).

    USC CREDIT UNION WOMEN’S STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
    Michaela Michael led the USC lacrosse offense with five goals (two on free-position shots) and three draw controls in a 13-4 win over Michigan at McAlister Field on Friday, Mar. 4. She also scored five goals in an 18-7 win over Vermont at Saturday, Mar. 5. In that game, she also dished out an assist, added five draw controls, and caused a turnover.

    The two games were the 16th and 17th hat trick games of her career and the eighth and ninth times that she has had at least five goals in a single contest. Michael was also named the MPSF Offensive Player of the Week for the second time this season (third of her career).

    The 12th-ranked Women of Troy have a week off before they host No. 10 Stony Brook for a Monday-afternoon game on Mar. 14 at McAlister Field.

    Also nominated for women's student-athlete of the week: Gabby Smith (tennis) and Avery Peterson (water polo).

    The USC Credit Union Student-Athletes of the Week are voted on by the student assistants and Sports Information Directors of the USC Sports Information Office. Nominations are compiled and distributed for voting by Brett Warner. Student assistant voters include, Andrew McKagan, Carlene Jones, Tera Novy, Kiia Brantley, Rachel Dobrin, Regan Estes, Lucy Worrall, and Alec Koondel.
