The USC men’s tennis team — enjoying its 10th straight season starting the year ranked in the nation’s top-10 — is all set for its first dual match of the new year. The No. 10 Trojans welcome UC Santa Cruz to Marks Stadium for a 3 p.m. clash on Monday (Jan. 16), marking the kickoff to the 2017 campaign that USC hopes will carry the Trojans to a 10th straight NCAA appearance.

Several Trojans tuned up for this opener with some individual action at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup and at the Long Beach 25K Futures event through the weekend. While sophomore Logan Smith and freshmen Brandon Holt and Riley Smith were taking on the big guys in Long Beach, seven other Trojans were battling it out at the Sherwood. For senior Rob Bellamy and sophomore Jake DeVine, it’s been a good run at the event, as the pair has powered through to the doubles title match. They’ll face a duo from Baylor — Benitez/Tchoutakian — at 10 a.m. tomorrow (Jan. 16) to decide the Sherwood doubles champ before returning to Troy for the first dual match of the season.

In singles at Sherwood, only Laurens Verboven was able to snag a first-round win, while the other Trojans were relegated to the consolation bracket. There, sophomore Jake DeVine and #114 junior Thibault Forget were able to dodge friendly fire en route to an all-Trojan consolation final. In an intensely competitive clash between teammates, it was DeVine who held his ground and pulled off a 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (14-12) win over Forget to claim the consolation crown.
