LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 8 USC men's tennis team hit cruise control to claim its first dual match win of the year, opening its 2016 campaign with a 7-0 sweep of No. 57 UC Davis in the Trojans' opening match of ITA Kick-Off Weekend today at Marks Stadium. The win pushes USC into tomorrow's championship match against No. 37 Tulane at 1 p.m. The Green Waves beat No. 33 Pepperdine this morning 4-0 to advance to tomorrow's final, where a ticket to next month's ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Virginia goes up for grabs. At 10 a.m. tomorrow (Jan. 23), UC Davis and Pepperdine will face off in the consolation match at Marks Stadium.

Saturday (Jan. 23) - Marks Stadium
10 a.m. -- Consolation match: Pepperdine vs. UC Davis
1 p.m. -- Championship match: Tulane vs. USC

The Trojans got out of the gates hot with a speedy push through doubles play. Court one's fresh pairing of Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven peeled out to a 6-1 win over their Aggie opponents Adamson/Levie. Court two would promptly wrap up the point with a 6-2 finish from the senior-freshman duo of Max de Vroome and Jack Jaede over UC Davis' Bacharach/Whittle. That quick clincher left action suspended on court three, where Jake DeVine and Tanner Smith were holding a 4-3 edge over Lam/Wade.

Still in his spot on court one, Nick Crystal stayed in efficient form in singles play. The #41 junior whipped up a 6-1, 6-0 victory over UC Davis' #38 Alec Adamson to make it a 2-0 Trojan lead in the match. Next, in his first dual match as a Trojan, freshman Jack Jaede took USC to a 3-0 advantage with his smooth 6-2, 6-4 win over Everett Maltby on court five. Moments later, it was junior Rob Bellamy snagging the clincher with a 6-2, 6-4 win of his own on court six over Jesse Ross. With that 4-0 lead ensuring victory for the Trojans, the match played on.

Another USC freshman hit the finish line next, as #83 Jake DeVine dealt out a 7-5, 7-5 win over Bryce McKelvie on court four to make it a 5-0 USC lead. USC's freshmen strength just kept coming. At the No. 2 spot, USC newcomer Laurens Verboven had regrouped from a loss in his second set to get back on track and finish out a 6-3, 4-6, 6-1 win over James Wade. That left one match still going strong, and yet another USC freshman would have the last word of the day. On court three, #69 Logan Smith topped Brett Bacharach 7-6 (4), 6-4 to end the day's work as a 7-0 USC victory.
