No. 9 USC Men Speed To Victory Over Utah State At ITA Team Indoors

    CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. -- The No. 9 USC men's tennis team regrouped and ripped through to a resounding win on day two at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Charlottesville, Va., registering a 5-0 sweep of Utah State in today's consolation match. A swift doubles point was followed by a string of straight set victories in singles, with Riley Smith ringing up the clincher from court six to improve the Trojans to 9-2 overall on the year.

    For the 11th straight match this season, USC whipped up the doubles point to start the day with the early advantage. At the top spot, freshman pairing #32 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith pinned up a 6-3 win over Utah State's Serrano/Wehnelt. Next, on court two, USC's #35 Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven snagged a 6-3 win over Maier/Swindells, and that important first point of the match was lodged on USC's side of the scoreboard. 

    Hitting the finish line first again was #13 Brandon Holt, who pinned up a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jack Swindells on court one to make it a 2-0 lead early on in singles action. At the No. 2 spot, it was USC's #36 sophomoreLogan Smith who streaked ahead of Utah State's Kai Wehnelt with a 6-3, 6-2 win to get the Trojans on the brink of victory. Coming through in the clutch was Holt's doubles counterpart, fellow freshman Riley Smith, who tallied a 6-4, 6-3 clincher over Jonas Maier on court six to make it a 4-0 USC lead to secure the Trojan win. Moments later on court five, USC's #119 Jack Jaede closed down the action with a quick wrap-up of Samuel Serrano to finish out the match as a 5-0 USC victory with his 7-6, 6-1 victory while the remaining matches were suspended.
    USC will now wrap up its consolation action with a bout against Baylor tomorrow (Feb. 19) at 3:30 p.m. ET to close down the Trojans' competition in Virginia.
