No. 12 USC Men Fight Back For 4-3 Win Over No. 33 Cal Poly

    Feb. 23, 2017

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- Fighting against both its opponents and the aggressive wind, the No. 12 USC men's tennis team came out on top today against visiting No. 33 Cal Poly 4-3. The Trojans had a slower start, losing the doubles point, but made up for it in hard-fought singles wins. Jack Jaede clinched the match for the Trojans, defeating his opponent, Josh Ortlip, 6-4, 7-6.

It was a tough battle for the doubles point today, with Cal Poly coming out on top. The Mustangs had the first win of the day defeating Rob Bellamy and Jack Jaede on court three. Freshmen duo Brandon Holt and Riley Smith responded by defeating the #35 ranked team Ben Donovan and Corey Pang 6-3 in the No.1 spot. The pressure then fell on court two where Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven were fighting it out against Karl Enander and Tim Tan. Crystal/Verboven fell just short with a 6-4 loss, and the attention turned to singles play.

Riley Smith continued to waste no time in singles by finishing first, defeating Antoine Noel 6-2, 6-3 on court five. Smith was soon followed by Rob Bellamy who took down Axel Damiens 6-1, 7-5 in the No. 6 spot. Bellamy had a quick first set, but climbed out of a 0-3 hole in the second set to win it in straight sets.

The Mustangs then answered back with a win on court three where Garrett Auproux defeated Thibault Forget 7-6, 6-3. This tied up the match with two points for each team.

#27 Brandon Holt sealed another win for the Trojans in the no. 1 spot defeating #35 Ben Donovan 6-3, 6-4. With the Trojans up 3-2, Jack Jaede sealed the win for USC, continuing his own win streak on court four with an 11th consecutive singles win.

Though the match belonged to the Trojans, Corey Pang continued to fight for the Mustangs on court two. Fighting until the very end, Pang narrowly edged out #42 Logan Smith 7-5, 6-4 to give Cal Poly an extra point.

The Trojans next play Stanford tomorrow (Feb. 24) at 3 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
