    Feb. 24, 2017

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 12 USC men's tennis team came up against a tough No. 35 Stanford squad at Marks Stadium tonight, forcing the Trojans to fight out of a deficit for another 4-3 win. The Cardinal took the early doubles point, but the Trojans managed to battle back in singles, winning the first three matches and taking the lead 3-1. The clincher came from Logan Smith on court three with a 7-6, 3-6, 6-1 win over Stanford's Michael Genender. USC improves to 12-2 overall with tonight's win.

It was an action-packed doubles point today, with the Cardinal edging the Trojans out to take the early lead 1-0. On court two, Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven were knocked off by Standord's Sameer Kumar and Michael Genender 6-3. The attention then turned to courts one and three, where it was a race to see who would finish first. In the No. 1 spot, Brandon Holt and Riley Smith started off with a 2-0 lead, only to find themselves having to dig out of a 2-5 hole. Meanwhile, on court three, Rob Bellamy and Jack Jaede stayed on serve against their opponents, David Wilczynski and Brandon Sutter. Both remaining matches stayed tight, but Wilczynski and Sutter were the first to close, narrowly edging out Bellamy/Jaede 7-5. Play suspended on court one with Holt and Smith up 6-5.

In singles play, Jack Jaede went straight to work on court four, finishing first and defeating #77 Jack Barber in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 for Jaede's 12th straight singles win.

#27 Brandon Holt finished soon after on court one, defeating #12 Tom Fawcett 6-4, 6-2. This gave the Trojans a 2-1 lead over the Cardinal.

Riley Smith came in with the third win for the Trojans, defeating Brandon Sutter 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. Smith and Sutter traded the first two sets, but Smith finished strong and gave the Trojans a crucial singles win over the Cardinal to make it 3-1 Trojans.

However, Stanford stayed in the match. On court two, Nick Crystal fought a hard battle against Sameer Kumar, falling in three sets. Crystal dropped his first set 3-6, but took the second set in a thrilling tie-breaker 7-6 (8). Yet, Kumar got the best of Crystal today in winning the third set 6-2 and giving Stanford another point, closing the gap to 3-2.

The match then came down to the wire with both Logan Smith on court two and Thibault Forget on court five battling it out in third sets. After nearly two and a half hours on the court, Smith came off first with the clincher. Forget finished soon after with a tough loss in the third set. Forget had battled back from down 1-4 only to get edged out in the tiebreaker by Stanford's David Wilczynski 7-6, 2-6, 7-6.

The Trojans next play against UCLA on March 9 at 3 p.m. at Marks Stadium.
