Feb. 27, 2014
LA JOLLA, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC men's tennis team dished out a shutout win over No. 62 San Diego today in La Jolla, playing an abbreviated match in which the Trojans and Toreros opted out of doubles play in order to get singles action underway. USC would win them all, scoring straight-set victories on five courts en route to a 6-0 sweep of San Diego. The Trojans now hold a 10-2 overall record on the year.
Max de Vroome opened the floodgates on the Trojan domination with his swift 6-2, 6-1 win on court four over Filip Vittek, closing out his win just before freshman Rob Bellamy almost matched that effort with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at the No. 6 spot. Bellamy took out Aaron Addison to lift USC ahead 2-0 in the match, and #43 Jonny Wang kept the trend rolling in pinning up a 6-2, 6-3 win over Ciaran Fitzgerald on court five. At the No. 3 position, freshman Connor Farren clinched the win for USC on a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Romain Kalaydjian that made it a 4-0 USC lead. On court one, USC's #6 Ray Sarmiento had a strong day with a 6-4, 6-4 win over #61 Clarke Spinosa to spin USC ahead 5-0, leaving the remaining action living large on court two. There, USC's #80 Roberto Quiroz made a comeback push to beat out Uros Petronijevic 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 for a finale to a 6-0 USC victory.
USC now switches gears for competition at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla through the weekend.
