WESTWOOD, CALIF. — The No. 12 USC men’s tennis team was dealt a 5-2 loss by No. 6 UCLA today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center in Westwood. The Trojans closed the gap down to one during singles play, but were unable to pull off the final two three-setters of the match. USC goes to 7-3 overall with the loss.

In doubles, USC got a heroic effort on court one from the junior-senior pairing of Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven. That duo whipped up a 6-4 upset win over UCLA’s #3 McDonald/Redlicki to make a statement in the match. USC fell short on courts two and three, however, and the Bruins managed the first point of the day with the doubles result.

In singles, the Bruins were able to add to their tally, climbing ahead 3-0 in the match on wins on courts six and one. At the No. 6 spot, Joseph Di Giulio notched a 6-1, 6-1 win over USC freshman Jack Jaede to make it 2-0, and #19 Mackenzie McDonald issued a 6-2, 6-4 win over USC’s #64 Max de Vroome on court one. The Trojans were unshaken by the deficit, however. Sophomore Thibault Forget continued his winning ways in serving up a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Logan Staggs to get the Trojans on the board. Then, USC’s #67 Nick Crystal had yet another upset win in his arsenal. Crystal dished out a 7-6, (5), 6-2 win over UCLA’s #36 Martin Redlicki at the No. 2 spot, and USC was within reach of its rivals, down 3-2 in the match.

The two remaining matches had two USC freshmen engaged in three-set battles against UCLA veterans. On court four, UCLA’s #94 Karue Sell pulled off a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 win on his homy courts over USC’s #92 freshman Jake DeVine to clinch the match for the Bruins. The battle raged on, meanwhile, on court three, where USC’s #56 freshman Logan Smith was entrenched in a third-set tiebreaker against UCLA’s #46 Gage Brymer. Brymer would pull off the nail biter over Smith with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (6) decision that wrapped the day as a 5-2 UCLA win in a nonconference clash between the two rivals.

USC now turns to individual action later this week with competition coming for the Trojans at the Pacific Coast Doubles Championships in La Jolla form March 3-6.
