No. 7 USC Men Heat Up For Another Win In Indian Wells|
March 18, 2017
INDIAN WELLS, CALIF. — The No. 7 USC men’s tennis team drummed up its second win over a top-10 team this season while stringing up the Trojans’ ninth straight victory with today’s 4-1 win over No. 9 Oklahoma out at the BNP Paribas Open Collegiate Challenge in Indian Wells, Once again, USC captured a decisive doubles point before pressing on to a strong stand in singles. Riley Smith picked up the first singles win for the Trojan cause before Logan Smith netted USC a 3-1 lead to put the Trojans in position for the win. At the No. 2 spot, senior Nick Crystal came through in the clutch, clinching things with a second-set tiebreaker to bring USC the win and improve the Trojans to 17-2 overall on the year. USC will now face No. 6 Baylor in the event’s championship bout tomorrow (March 19) at 10 a.m. PT.
USC’s top doubles guns held court at the top spot once again, as #19 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith manufactured a 6-2 win over Oklahoma’s #59 Papa/Bragusi. At the No. 2 slot, USC’s Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven replicated that score with a 6-2 win of their own over Oklahoma duo Ghilea/Oetzbach, and USC was up 1-0 in the contest.
Oklahoma was able to snag a point during the singles stretch, but just one — a 6-4, 6-4 win from Jochen Bertsch over USC’s Jack Jaede on court four. And still, the Trojans were too much for the Sooners to take today. Riley Smith had punched up a 6-4, 6-3 win over Adrian Oetzbach on court six to get USC a lift, and later on it was #45 Logan Smith who tugged the Trojans within reach. The sophomore dropped #77 Florin Bragusi with a 6-3, 6-4 win on court three to make it a 3-1 USC advantage, setting up his senior for the clincher. On court two, Nick Crystal dug in during his second-set tiebreaker to close things down. Crystal wrapped up the match — and a ninth straight USC victory — with his 6-4, 7-6 win over #101 Alex Ghilea.
That suspended action on courts one and five, where Trojans Brandon Holt and Thibault Forget were leading in their respective matches.
The Collegiate Challenge championship match between No. 7 USC and No. 6 Baylor presents a rematch of an earlier face-off between the two tough teams. The Trojans beat the Bears 4-2 in a consolation match out at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships in Virginia back in February.
