No. 5 USC Men Work Ahead For 6-1 Win Over Washington

    April 1, 2017

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The No. 5 USC men's tennis team wrapped up another Pac-12 win today with a 6-1 victory over visiting No. 32 Washington. Against the Huskies today, the Trojans breezed to the doubles point before taking down five UW players in singles play to maneuver to the victory, with Jack Jaede ringing up his second straight clincher for the Trojan cause. USC is now 19-3 overall and 2-0 in Pac-12 action.

Doubles action saw USC's freshman duo come through with the opening victory of the day. On court one, #20 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith cleaned up a 6-2 win over Douglas/Foley, and then fellow Trojans Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven came through with another reliable victory. On court two, Crystal/Verboven topped off the doubles point with a 6-2, win over Lam/Sommer, and it was on to singles play with USC gripping a 1-0 lead.

In singles, Nick Crystal stayed in winning mode in cruising to a 6-1, 6-4 win over Enzo Sommer at the No. 2 spot. Meanwhile, #21 Holt was clicking off a 6-1, 6-0 win over #89 Mitch Stewart in his home on court one, and USC bounced out to a 3-0 lead. That would hold for a bit as matches stretched on the remaining courts, at least, until Jack Jaede hit his stride and closed out a 6-2, 6-4 win over Gal Hakak on court four. That clinched the match with USC up 4-0 on the Huskies, but action continued on a sunny day at Marks Stadium. Soon after, Thibault Forget made it 5-0 for the Trojans with a 6-3, 6-3 finish over Washington's Amit Batta at the No. 5 spot. On court six, Riley Smith sidestepped a need for a third set on court six as he hammered out a 7-3 decision in the second-set tiebreaker to pin up a 6-3, 7-6 (3) win over Piers Foley and make it 6-0 Trojans. Meanwhile, on court three, USC's #47 Logan Smith and Washington's Jake Douglas had their match roll into a 10-point tiebreaker to decide things. Smith had won the first set, only to have Douglas steal the second. In the tiebreaker, Douglas built a lead and fended off his Trojan opponent to close out the match as a 6-1 decision with the Husky's 5-7, 6-1, 1-0 (10-7) win over Smith.

USC now turns to take a Pac-12 road trip to the Bay Area next week. The Trojans will visit Stanford in a 3 p.m. match on Friday (April 7) before heading to Berkeley to face Cal at 1 p.m. on Saturday (April 8).
