No. 6 USC Men Rattle Off 4-0 Win Over Arizona|
April 14, 2017
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 6 USC men’s tennis team poured out a stream of decisive wins today to tack up another home victory and another Pac-12 win with a 4-0 sweep of visiting Arizona. USC’s 15th win of the year at Marks Stadium bumped the Trojans up to 21-4 overall and to 4-1 in conference play, with this latest victory locked in with a clincher from Riley Smith on court six.
Riley Smith had a hand in USC’s first win of the day as well, as he and fellow freshman Brandon Holt — ranked #11 in the land as a doubles duo — paired up for a swift 6-2 win on court one in doubles. That takedown of Arizona’s Kneale/Plaskett was followed by another doubles domination on court two by Trojans Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven. The #76 Crystal/Verboven pinned up a 6-3 win at the No. spot over Wildcats Botha/Kasahara, suspending action on court three with USC’s Jack Jaede and David Laser up 5-3 on Arizona’s Meparidze/Reyes.
In singles action, Jack Jaede — clincher of seven matches for the Trojans this season — hit the finish line first this time. The Aussie sophomore delivered a 6-1, 6-4 win over Arizona’s Shoki Kasahara to get USC a 2-0 advantage. Moments later, the scoreboard would show a 3-0 USC lead as #23 Brandon Holt surrendered only three games in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Shoti Meparidze on court one. USC had won first sets down the line, and while Arizona would snag a second set on court two, USC’s No. 5 and 6 slots were speeding toward the decider. Freshman Riley Smith closed the gap first, locking up the USC victory with his 6-4, 6-2 win over Andres Reyes and closing down the day’s action at Marks Stadium. That left matches suspended on courts two, three and five.
USC will get right back to it tomorrow (April 15) with a Senior Day bout against Utah coming up at 1 p.m. at Marks Stadium. It will be the final regular-season home match for USC’s seniors Rob Bellamy, Nick Crystal and David Laser — all of whom were freshmen on USC’s last NCAA Championship team in 2014.
