No. 7 Seeded USC Men Take Down Idaho In NCAA First Round|

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. - The No. 7 seeded USC men's tennis team took to its home courts at Marks Stadium to open NCAA Tournament play against Idaho today. The Trojans beat the Vandals in the NCAA First Round with a swift 4-0 score to improve to an overall record of 23-4.
On court two, the Trojan duo of #74 de Vroome/Johnson snagged the first win of the afternoon by beating Idaho's Salazar/Varney 8-4 in doubles play. Seconds later, USC's Crystal/Forget closed out their match with a win over the Vandal pair of Kovacs/Sanz 8-3. Their win secured the doubles point for the Trojans.
USC entered the singles portion of the competition with a 1-0 lead over Idaho. On court three, USC's #45 Jonny Wang took a strong start over Idaho's Cristobal Ramos Salazar by taking the first set 6-0. He continued to remain poised throughout the rest of the match. Wang ran away with the second set as he finished with a decisive 6-2 score to win the second point for the Trojans. Wang's win increased his winning streak to 15 victories, the longest on the team.
On court six, Trojan Rob Bellamy blasted through his first set by finishing 6-0 over Vandal opponent Alberto Sanz. Shortly after Wang's match ended on court three, Bellamy closed out his match by grinding Sanz back and forth across the court until the Vandal ultimately swung out of bounds. Bellamy earned the third point for USC with his 6-0, 6-4 victory.
As the Trojans continued to increase their lead over the Vandals, USC's #11 Yannick Hanfmann would have the final word. Hanfmann claimed the first set on court one with a 6-2 score over Idaho's Odon Barta. As the crowd in Marks Stadium turned their attention towards court one, Hanfmann sped through his final game and finished his match with an ace which resulted in an eruption of cheers from the stands. Hanfmann clinched the match for USC with his 6-2, 6-4 win over Barta. Today's clincher was Hanfmann's fourth of the season.
Earlier in the day, No. 40 San Diego State advanced to the Second Round after upsetting No. 21 San Diego 4-3 in the First Round. This was SDSU's first appearance in the NCAA Tournament since 2005. The Aztecs improve to 18-6 overall by winning their first NCAA Tournament match since 2003. The Trojans are 21-0 in their series with Aztecs.
USC takes on San Diego State tomorrow (May 9) at 3 p.m. in the NCAA Second Round in Marks Stadium.
