    May 21, 2015

WACO, TEXAS -- USC seniors Yannick Hanfmann and Jonny Wang flexed more winning muscle today at the NCAA Singles Championships with wins in the Round of 32. For Wang, the victory secures his first career ITA All-American honor, as his win puts him in the NCAA Round of 16 for the first time. Hanfmann, as a 9-16 seed in this year's singles draw, already has a set of five ITA All-American awards to his name. Hanfmann is now making his second appearance in the NCAA Singles Round of 16, where he and Wang will both be looking to break through to the Quarterfinals with a win tomorrow.

Senior Jonny Wang came up big in his bout with No. 2 seeded Julian Lenz of Baylor. On Lenz' home court, Wang dug in his heels, surrendering a second set before fending off match point in the third set and hammering out an impressive 6-2, 1-6, 7-5 upset to maneuver his way into the Round of 16 for the first time in his career. He is now set to square off against #37 Felipe Soares of Texas Tech tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT to fight for a place in the Quarterfinals.

Fellow senior Yannick Hanfmann was all business in his Round of 32 matchup against Georgia Tech's #53 Christopher Eubanks. Hanfmann skillfully wrapped up a smooth 6-2, 6-0 win over Eubanks to power on in the singles draw as well. Hanfmann has a tough Round of 16 bout ahead of him, as he'll square off against No. 7 seeded Noah Rubin of Wake Forest tomorrow at 10 a.m. CT to battle for a breakthrough to the Quarterfinals for the first time in his Trojan career.

Coming up short of a Round of 16 singles bid today was senior Roberto Quiroz, who was up against #9 Quentin Monaghan of Notre Dame. The Fighting Irish player managed to stay a step ahead of Quiroz for a 6-4, 6-4 decision that ended Quiroz's singles run in Waco. He ends his USC singles career holding an impressive 122-28 all-time record.

As the day wound down, USC's Hanfmann and Quiroz teamed back up for the NCAA Doubles Round of 32. There, the No. 2 seeded Trojan pair was up against a tough pairing of Texas' #19 #19 Glasspool/Hess-Olesen. The Trojans would force a third set, but the Longhorns would pull of the victory with a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 decision that wrapped Hanfmann/Quiroz' career together. This season, Hanfmann/Quiroz posted a 22-8 overall doubles record, having stood tall as the 2014 ITA National Indoors Doubles Champions this season.
