Brandon Holt Falls In NCAA First Round In Three-Setter|
May 24, 2017
ATHENS, GA. -- USC's #19-ranked freshman Brandon Holt was dealt just his ninth singles loss of his first season as a Trojan today, falling in his NCAA Singles debut in Athens, Ga. His 2016-17 campaign is not over, however, as Holt teams back up with his fellow freshman teammate Riley Smith tomorrow (May 25) for the NCAA Doubles Round of 32. The pair is ranked #14 in the nation and is coming off an upset win over the nation's top-ranked doubles pair, which the Trojans topped on court one during an eventual NCAA Team Round of 16 lost to host Georgia last week.
Today in Athens, Holt was up against Texas Tech's top gun in #21 Jolan Cailleau, who had managed a win over Holt back when the two teams met in a dual match in Los Angeles back in March. Today's rematch in the NCAA Singles First Round saw the two battle it out through three sets once again. This time, Cailleau was able to snag a tight first set before Holt fired back with a solid win in the second. That forced the deciding third set, and there it was Cailleau who got the breaks necessary to beat Holt with a 7-5, 1-6, 6-2 final that sends the Red Raider along to the Round of 32 tomorrow. The loss snapped a six-match win streak held by Holt to give him a 35-9 overall singles record for his freshman season at USC.
Now, Holt and Smith are paired up for their NCAA Doubles debut tomorrow (May 25) in a Round of 32 meet-up against Oklahoma State's 5-8 seeded and #7-ranked Cash/Kadhe at 5:30 p.m. ET.
