Freshman Jake DeVine opened up his Trojan career with three consecutive singles wins.

SAN FRANCISCO, CALIF. -- Five young members of the USC men's tennis team engaged in singles and doubles action in the first official event of the season for the Trojans, up at the Battle in the Bay in San Francisco. All four of USC's freshmen got their first matches in as Trojans, and all four got out of the gates in winning fashion. So, too, did USC sophomore Tanner Smith, who was the relative veteran of the bunch over the weekend.

Of those newcomers, three Trojans managed to work their ways into the singles quarterfinals. For freshman Jake DeVine, his path started before the rest, as the only one of the crew without a bye in the Round of 64. Unfazed, DeVine promptly pinned up a 6-4, 6-2 win to join his teammates in the Round of 32 later that day. There, all five Trojans snagged wins to advance to the Round of 16. DeVine and Jack Jaede both pinned up straight-set wins over their respective opponents, while fellow freshmen Logan Smith and Kalman Boyd staged three-set comebacks to advance. Sophomore Tanner Smith also fought out of a first-set deficit to beat his opponent in three.

On Saturday (Sept. 19), Logan Smith would get snarled in another dramatic three-setter, falling in a third-set tiebreak to wrap his run at the event. Tanner Smith also stumbled in his Round of 16 match, while freshmen DeVine, Jaede and Boyd strung up straight-set wins to push into the quarterfinals. That's where the first-year Trojans' runs would end, though. Jaede would fall in three to the draw's top seed, and Boyd also would go three sets before taking a loss. DeVine fell to the No. 7 seed in the draw.

The five young Trojans also got in on doubles play at the event, but only fourth-seeded Tanner Smith and Jaede were able to snag a first-round win before bowing out in the quarterfinals.
