Solid First Day Of Play For Trojans At ITA Southwest Regional|
Oct. 17, 2014
MALIBU, CALIF. -- USC men's tennis has four singles players and three doubles teams reporting for duty tomorrow after a busy and largely successful first day at the ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Malibu.
Rob Bellamy was the first to hit the courts in singles action today, starting things off with a Round of 128 match victory that pushed him on through to the Round of 64 along with seven other Trojan teammates. Half of that crew would pull off wins in the Round of 64, including the warrior of the day, Jonny Wang, who fought through an intense three sets -- all of which went to a tiebreaker. Wang would prevail 7-6, 6-7, 7-6 to move along to tomorrow's Round of 32. Freshman Tanner Smith had almost as tense a match, as he fought back from a 3-6 loss in his first set to win the next two in tiebreakers for a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 decision to advance. Junior Max de Vroome whipped up a comparatively easy 6-4, 6-4 decision in his Round of 64 match, while Eric Johnson took no prisoners and cruised to a swift 6-0, 6-0 shutout win. Bellamy, Connor Farren, Nick Crystal and Henry Ji would not fare as well in their Round of 64 tilts, however, taking losses to interrupt their runs at the main draw.
USC will be fully loaded for tomorrow's doubles Round of 32. Sophomore pair Rob Bellamy and Connor Farren earned their spot alongside three other Trojan tandems with a win today in the Round of 64, but will bow out of the next round due to an injury sustained by Farren in his singles match today. Bellamy/Farren took down Pepperdine's Menichella/Thakkar 8-5. But three other USC duos are still in the mix are No. 6 seeded de Vroome/Smith, No. 8 seeded Johnson/Wang and unseeded Crystal/Laser.
