Nov. 6, 2014
FLUSHING, N.Y. -- The all-senior contingent of Trojans came to play in New York today, advancing across the board in singles and doubles play at the prestigious ITA National Indoor Championships. In the singles realm, Yannick Hanfmann and Jonny Wang both snagged strong first-round wins to move along to the Round of 16. So, too, did Hanfmann and doubles partner Roberto Quiroz. The Trojan tandem had a first-round bye and then delivered a decisive win in the Round of 16 to punch a ticket to tomorrow's doubles quarterfinals at the USTA-Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y.
The nation's #2 ranked singles player and the No. 2 seed in the tournament, Hanfmann fought through a first-set tiebreaker before cruising along to his Round of 32 victory with a 7-6 (3), 6-3 win over Ohio State's Mikael Torpegaard. He'll now face #11 Harrison Adams of Texas A&M tomorrow in the Round of 16.
Fellow senior Wang, ranked #39 in the nation, showed no fear against his #19-ranked opponent Roberto Cid of South Florida. The Trojan tore his way through to the Round of 16 with a solid 6-3, 6-4 upset of Cid to join Hanfmann in the next day's main draw competition.
In doubles, Hanfmann teamed back up with fellow senior Quiroz to much success. Ranked #19 in the nation as a pair, Hanfmann/Quiroz are tabbed as the top seeds in the bracket. They proved worthy of the seeding today, scoring a first-round bye and then delivering a dominating 6-1, 6-3 win over Columbia's Pham/Vermeer in the Round of 16. That puts Hanfmann/Quiroz into tomorrow's doubles quarterfinals against Notre Dame's Covalischi/Hagar.
