The USC men’s tennis team engaged in individual action in the first spring competition of the new year, splitting up to compete at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup and National Collegiate Tennis Classic last weekend. USC pushed four Trojans into the singles main draw quarterfinals at the Sherwood Cup, while Logan Smith came away with the consolation crown at the event. At the NCTC, Henry Ji was the big winner with his trip to the title match in the singles draw.
USC had a whopping nine Trojans engaged in action at the Sherwood Cup. Of the four doubles pairs in the mix, three registered opening wins to secure a spot in the quarterfinals, but each was upended in that round. In singles, freshman Jack Jaede was the most successful of the bunch in the main draw. He’d forge a path through to the semifinals, grabbing three wins along the way before falling in a three-setter in the semis. Jaede had to engage in friendly fire in his quarterfinal bout, coming up against teammate Rob Bellamy in that round to earn his place in the semis. Fellow Trojans Max de Vroome and Thibault Forget had also powered into the quarterfinal round before taking a loss to bring their trips to a close. Freshman Logan Smith, meanwhile, bounced back from a first-round loss in the main draw to snag four consecutive wins in the consolation bracket, capping it off with victory in the consolation title match with a 7-5, 6-4 win over UCLA’s Martin Redlicki.
Out at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic, USC’s Henry Ji and David Laser were in action in the singles and doubles draws. Paired together for doubles, the duo went 1-1. In singles, Laser was ousted in the first round to move into consolation play, while sophomore Ji tacked up three straight wins to reach the final. There, Ji took a loss to an opponent from San Diego State.
Now, the Trojans team back up for dual-match action this weekend. No. 8 USC plays host to the ITA Kick-Off Weekend at Marks Stadium, where Pepperdine, Tulane and UC Davis come to town to vie for a spot at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships. On Friday (Jan. 22), Pepperdine and Tulane will face off at 10 a.m. followed by a 1 p.m. matchup between USC and UC Davis. On Saturday (Jan. 23), the consolation match is set for 10 a.m. with the championship match taking place at 1 p.m.
