Steve Johnson Will Play For Doubles Bronze, Nets Another Singles Win In Rio

    Aug. 11, 2016

USC's most decorated Trojan tennis player, Steve Johnson, will vie for Olympic bronze in doubles alongside countryman Jack Sock after the pair took their first loss in Rio today. After yesterday's action was rained out, Johnson got back on court this morning for his singles third round matchup. He was in full force for that one, dropping Evgeny Donskoy of Russia with a swift 6-1, 6-1 victory to propel the Trojan into the singles quarterfinals. He's now up against defending gold-medalist Andy Murray in the next round of singles.

In doubles, Johnson paired back up with Sock for the doubles semifinals. To start, the USA stars were handed their first lost set of Olympic action, and would fall short in the second to take a 6-4, 7-5 loss to Romania's Mergeau/Teceau. That sends Johnson/Sock on to the bronze-medal match for a chance to bring home some shiny hardware in Johnson's first journey to the Olympic Games.
