Jalen Penrose had 17 kills while hitting .462 and Chris Nugent added 15 kills (hitting .429) to lead No. 10 Penn State to a 25-22, 28-26, 29-27 non-conference sweep over No. 12 USC on Thursday (Jan. 7) in the first day of the Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge in State College, Pa.
It was the season opener for both teams, as well as the debut for new USC head coach Jeff Nygaard.
In the day's other match, No. 5 UCLA beat No. 6 Ohio State, 24-26, 25-22, 25-22, 25-22.
Royce Clements had 11 digs for PSU.
The Nittany Lions hit .277 to USC's .256 and they had 30 digs and 7.0 blocks.
In the first set, USC held an 18-16 lead before Penn State went on a 3-0 run and the Trojans could never retake the lead. With the Trojans up 16-14 in the second set, the Nittany Lions scored back-to-back points twice to first tie it at 16-16 and then to build a 21-19 lead before USC went on its own 2-0 run to knot it at 23-23, only to see Penn State score the extended set's final 2 points. With the third set tied at 16-16, USC scored 4 unanswered points to go up 20-16 before PSU clawed back to even it at 23-23 and then scored the match's last 2 points in overtime.
USC next faces Ohio State (1-2) on Friday (Jan. 8) at 2 p.m. PT in State College. The Trojans will then open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at Cal State Northridge on Jan. 15. USC's first home match is on Jan. 21 against No. 9 UC Santa Barbara.
