No. 12 UC Santa Barbara Men's Volleyball Outlasts USC In 5 Sets

    Jacob Delson had 22 kills while hitting .447 and served 4 aces to help the No. 12-ranked UC Santa Barbara men’s volleyball team outlast unranked USC in 5 sets, 25-21, 21-25, 25-18, 19-25, 15-10, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Wednesday (Jan. 18) in Santa Barbara.

    UC Santa Barbara improved to 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the MPSF, while USC fell to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in MPSF play.

    Lucas Yoder led USC with 17 kills, while Aaron Strange added 14 kills and 8 digs, Andy Benesh had 11 kills (hitting .526) and 6 blocks and Matt Douglas had 7 digs.

    Corey Chavers added 14 kills and 7 blocks for UCSB, Keenan Sanders had 10 kills while hitting .643, Henri Cherry had 8 kills and 5 blocks and Casey McGarry and Parker Boehle each had 7 digs.

    UCSB outhit USC, .336 to .299 and the Gauchos had more blocks, 10.5 to 7.0.

    USC fell behind quickly in the first set, getting down 3-1, and could never catch up. The second set was tied at 11-11 when the Trojans scored 5 of the next 6 points to build a 16-12 lead that was never threatened (USC hit .444 in the set). UCSB used a 4-0 run early in the third set to go up 6-2 and steadily pulled away while hitting .462. A 3-0 spurt by USC in the fourth set gave the Trojans a 13-10 lead and they held off the Gauchos. UCSB scored the first 3 points of the final set, a lead that USC could never overcome as the Gauchos hit .412.

    USC stays on the road for the second of its 5-match MPSF road trip when it visits No. 2 UCLA at 8 p.m. on Friday (Jan. 20), with Crosstown Cup points on the line. It will air live on Pac-12 Network and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
