Box Score

Juan Figueroa had 16 kills and Murphy Troy added 15 kills to lead the No. 9-ranked USC men's volleyball team to a 36-34, 30-23, 30-20 sweep over UC San Diego in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match on Wednesday (Feb. 13) at USC's Galen Center.

USC improved to 7-7 overall and 6-5 in the MPSF, while the Tritons fell to 4-9 and 1-9.

Figueroa hit .625 with just 1 error on 24 attempts and added 4 blocks and 4 digs. Teammate C.J. Schellenberg had 10 kills, 5 blocks, 5 digs and 2 aces, while Austin Zahn had 9 blocks, Jimmy Killian had 7 digs and 5 blocks while dishing out 49 assists and Hunter Current had 9 kills (hitting .600) and 5 blocks.

For UCSD, Frank Fritsch had 12 kills, 4 digs and 3 blocks and Eric Leserman had 13 digs.

USC hit .422 overall to UCSD's .242 and the Trojans had more blocks (16.0 to 6.0) and aces (5 to 1).

The first game went longer than USC hoped as the Trojans saw a 29-27 game-point lead evaporate and it wasn't until a Troy kill followed by a Schellenberg ace that USC was able to pull it out despite the Tritons' torrid .457 hitting in the game (the Trojans hit .444). In the second game, USC broke a 9-9 tie on a Triton hitting error and a Figueroa ace and then steadily pulled away while hitting .483. USC used a 4-0 run in the third game to open up a 12-7 lead and were never threatened the rest of the way.

USC next hosts No. 3 Long Beach State in an MPSF match on Friday (Feb. 15) in the Galen Center at 7 p.m.
