Five Trojans Named To MPSF All-Academic Team|

Five USC men’s volleyball players—seniors Brooks Varni and Tommy Leonard, juniors Andy Benesh and Vinnie Rios and sophomore Jack Yoder—were named to the 2016 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation All-Academic team.
Only 3 of the MPSF’s other 11 schools had more All-Academic honorees than USC.
Varni and Benesh were repeat awardees after also being honored in 2015.
MPSF All-Academic team members must have a 3.00 or higher cumulative grade point average, be at least a sophomore academically with at least a full academic year in residence at the institution and have competed in at least 50% of the team’s matches.
Benesh sported the group’s highest cumulative GPA at 3.40 as a communication major. Yoder had a 3.27 GPA while majoring in planning, policy and development, while Varni was a 3.40 as a communication major. Leonard’s GPA was 3.20 as a business administration major and Rios had a 3.12 GPA as a global medicine and human biology major.
Benesh started for his third year as at middle blocker in 2016 and hit .377 (third on USC) with 109 kills, 52 blocks (second on USC), 37 digs and 15 aces (second on USC). Yoder was a part-time starting setter this past season and had a team-best 546 assists, plus 12 kills, 64 digs, 30 blocks and 5 aces. Varni, a 2-time USC captain, started for his second season at libero in 2016 and had a team-best 161 digs along with 35 assists. Leonard was a part-time starting middle blocker in 2016 and he hit .319 (fourth on USC) with 111 kills (fourth on USC), a team-best 55 blocks, 17 digs and 7 aces. Rios was a backup libero and serving specialist last season.
