The USA men's volleyball team, behind the play of current Trojan Micah Christenson and former USC great Murphy Troy, won its pool at the NORCECA (North America, Central America and Caribbean) Continental Championship in Langley, B.C., Canada.

The USA men captured Pool A, but must wait until after the final matches in Pools B and C on Wednesday (Sept. 25) to find out if they have to play in Thursday's (Sept. 26) quarterfinals. The two pool-winning teams with the best point ratios will advance straight to Friday's (Sept. 27) semifinals.

The championship match is Sept. 28, with the winner qualifying for the FIVB Grand Champions Cup in November in Japan.

In pool play, the USA beat both St. Lucia, 25-12, 25-10, 25-11, on Monday (Sept. 23), and Dominican Republic on Tuesday (Sept. 24), 25-19, 25-17, 25-9.

Christenson, a junior at USC who has played extensively with the USA Junior and Youth National Teams in past years, saw his first action with the USA National Team while starting the St. Lucia match. He played the first two sets against St. Lucia, serving five aces and getting a block. He then started and played the entire Dominican Republic match, getting one kill, three blocks and one ace.

Troy, the 2011 Collegiate National Player of the Year, has played with the USA National Team in World League play. He also has played overseas in Italy. He led all scorers in the St. Lucia match with 14 points on a match-high 12 kills, one block and one ace. Troy did not play against Dominican Republic

Former Trojan Juan Figueroa is competing for Puerto Rico, which fell to Cuba, 25-17, 22-25, 25-22, 25-22, in its opening match of Pool B play. Puerto Rico now faces Bahamas on Wednesday (Sept. 25).

The USA men are tied for fifth in the world rankings with Cuba, the two-time defending NORCECA Championships champion.

The USA men last won the NORCECA Championship in 2007. They finished second to Cuba in 2009 and 2011. Overall, the United States has won the Men's NORCECA Championship seven times since it was first held in 1969. Cuba, the only other team to have won, has 15 titles.
