No. 2 USC Scores 21-4 Win Over No. 19 Santa Clara In Mountain Pacific Invite Opener

    Sept. 23, 2016

BERKELEY, CALIF. -- The No. 2 USC men's water polo team passed its first test of the Mountain Pacific Invitational with a well-rounded effort as 15 different Trojans scored in a 21-4 win over No. 19 Santa Clara. The win moves USC into the next segment of group play tomorrow (Sept. 24) with a 10:50 a.m. matchup against either No. 7 Long Beach State or No. 11 UC Davis to fight for a spot in the evening's semifinal bout. USC is now 7-0 overall with today's win in Berkeley.

USC rang up the first 11 goals of the game from the hands of 11 different Trojans as USC notched a 6-0 lead in the first frame and went on to keep ticking off goals through to an 11-0 halftime advantage over the Broncos. McQuin Baron helped anchor that first-half shutout in the cage while the USC defense stymied Santa Clara successful for the first 16 minutes of action. Simon Wu checked in for duty in goal for the second half. The Broncos broke their silence with an early score, but that was followed promptly by the first Trojan to break the single-goal trend as freshman Matt Maier busted through with his second of the day to make it 12-1 Trojans early in the third.

Also in the third, USC had three new Trojans tally goals as Murphy Slater, Sam Slobodien and Mitch Embrey each got to the back of the net to help build an 18-3 advantage entering the fourth period. Freshman goalie Will Rubschlager would punch in for that last frame between the pipes while Chase Koplow registered his third goal of the day and Brock Hudnut joined the scoring party for the Trojans. Embrey would cap things off for USC with one last goal that wrapped the game as a 21-4 Trojan victory.

The action continues in Berkeley for the Trojans tomorrow (Sept. 24) for two more games to set up for the placement games on Sunday (Sept. 25).
