No. 3 USC Claims 22-2 Win Over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps|
Oct. 27, 2016
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The No. 3 USC men’s water polo team saw two more Trojans break the 100-goal barrier en route to a 22-2 win over visiting Claremont-Mudd-Scripps tonight at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. Matteo Morelli broke through on his first of three goals tonight, and Grant Stein joined the club on the opening goal of the second period. That makes three new inductees to the USC century club this year, as Blake Edwards punched up his 100th career goal two weeks ago. USC improves to 17-1 overall after tonight’s nonconference win and now turns to a heated rematch coming to home waters this Saturday. The Trojans will host No. 2 California — the only team to beat USC this season — in a 6:30 p.m. MPSF matchup on Saturday (Oct. 29).
Thanks to Morelli’s hat trick out of the gates, the Trojans jumped out to a 4-0 lead on the Stags before the visitors knocked in a goal in the waning seconds of the first period. That galvanized the Trojan defense and lit a fuse on the USC offense, which rattled off a 13-goal scoring surge sparked by Stein’s 100th career goal. A whopping 11 different Trojans contributed to that 13-goal rally, with Marin Dasic and Stein both striking twice as USC forged ahead 18-1.
A searing backhand from James Walters had crafted an 11-1 halftime lead for the Trojans. A deft passing series in the last stages of the third saw Thomas Dunstan hit Morelli for a setup to Blake Edwards to make it 15-1 Trojans entering the final frame, and three more USC scores opened the fourth as USC continued its scoring blitz. CMS broke its silence with a blast midway through the fourth, only to have USC hammer out four more goals in the final stretch. Dasic completed his hat trick, while Nick Bell provided his second, and Murphy Slater and Mitch Embrey each put a notch on the scoresheet to close out the 22-2 USC victory.
USC’s next game is a major MPSF matchup against No. 2 California on Saturday (Oct. 29) at 6:30 p.m. at Uytengsu Aquatics Center. The game will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
