No. 2 Trojans Tip The Scales In 19-1 Win Over San Jose State

    Nov. 6, 2016

LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- A resounding 19-1 win got the USC men's water polo team to a 19-1 overall record thanks to a well-balanced nonconference outing at Uytengsu Aquatics Center today. The Trojans pinned up the first eight goals of the game and then finished up with the final 11 after a second-half shutout to secure the win over visiting San Jose State. The victory is USC's 11th straight and sets up the Trojans for a huge regular-season finale next week as No. 2 USC hosts top-ranked UCLA in an 11 a.m. crosstown splashdown on Saturday (Nov. 12) at Uytengsu.

Up against San Jose State today, the Trojans were a well-oiled machine. Twelve different Trojans got to the back of the net in the win, while the USC defense was near-perfect. McQuin Baron made 10 saves to back up the defense, and the Spartans' only goal came on a 6-on-5 chance with no USC goalie in the cage after an exclusion of Baron. That goal came after USC had mounted an 8-0 lead, with Matteo Morelli and Marin Dasic each contributing a pair of goals in that early rally en route to hat tricks by both Trojans in the game. Zach D'Sa had served up assists on three of those USC goals during the 8-0 surge, while Lachlan Edwards was a workhorse in set, earning the first two power plays for the Trojan cause. Lazar Pasuljevic would punch up two goals in the second period to further the Trojan cause before SJSU's lone goal of the game made it an 8-1 USC lead by halftime.

In the second half, USC's defense stayed in complete control as the Spartans were unable to crack the Trojans in the last 16 minutes of action. Meanwhile, Thomas Dunstan lit the fuse on USC's 11-0 second-half effort as he finished off a setup from Blake Edwards early in the third. Grant Stein would also get in on the scoring, while James Walters delivered back-to-back goals before Nick Bell closed down the third with a counterattack finish sparked by a turnover forced by Dasic and set up with another assist from D'Sa. USC's 14-1 lead would balloon to the 19-1 final as D'Sa plugged in his first goal and Dasic and Walters both reached respective hat tricks. Matt Maier and Brock Hudnut also jumped on the scoresheet before the close of the game, which was finalized by two more saves from Baron.

All USC's focus now turns to a marquee matchup against crosstown rival UCLA. The top two teams in the nation will tangle in their regular-season finale to fight for position in the coming MPSF Tournament and improve their chances for a place in the NCAA Championships. The Trojans and the Bruins are lined up for an 11 a.m. clash on Saturday (Nov. 12) at USC's Uytengsu Aquatics Center in a game that will be televised by Pac-12 Networks.
