Incoming Trojan Marko Vavic Earns Silver With U.S. Men’s National Team|
May 3, 2017
Freshly inked to become the third Vavic sibling to cap up for USC water polo, Marko Vavic made his USA Senior National Team debut last month as a member of Team USA’s roster for the FINA Men’s Intercontinental Tournament. The incoming USC freshman would wrap the experience with a silver medal, as he and his USA teammates beat every team except host Australia at the event.
Vavic went big in wins over Kazakhstan and China, registering hat tricks in both USA victories. He scored again in a preliminary-round loss to Australia before Team USA topped New Zealand to take a place in the gold-medal game. Up against host Australia again in the final, Team USA took an 8-6 loss to the Aussies to wrap the trip with silver medals.
Vavic will join the USC men as a freshman for the 2017 season to come, following in the footsteps of All-American siblings Nikola — also a U.S. National Teamer — and Monica, who played for the USC women and was on the U.S. Women’s National Team as well. A 6-5 driver, Marko will be the third Vavic to play for father Jovan, who has been the head coach at USC for 23 years.
