Trojans Morelli and Maier Sweep MPSF Weekly Honors|
Oct. 31, 2016
Two big wins last week have secured two Trojans on the MPSF honor roll, as Matteo Morelli captures his first selection as MPSF Player of the Week and freshman Matt Maier collects his second pick as MPSF Newcomer of the Week.
Junior Matteo Morelli scored four goals to pace the No. 3 Trojans to a 10-6 upset win over No. 2 California, avenging last month’s loss to the Golden Bears. Along the way, Morelli also served up two assists and nabbed two steals against Cal to help secure USC’s win and stay perfect in MPSF play on the year. Three days earlier, Morelli had scored the first three goals of the game – including his 100th career goal – during a 22-2 USC win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, while again handing out two assists and registering one steal for the Trojan cause. After seven goals scored in USC’s two wins last week, Morelli now stands as the Trojans’ second leading scorer this year with 33 goals to date. This is the first MPSF Player of the Week award for Morelli in his USC career.
True freshman Matt Maier scored one big goal and assisted on another in USC’s win over Cal. Maier’s goal came in the second frame as USC worked to its first two-goal advantage in the game, up 5-3. His assist came on the first USC goal of the game to help spark the Trojan offense. Days earlier, Maier provided one goal during USC’s 22-2 nonconference win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. USC is now 18-1 overall and 2-0 in MPSF play.
The Trojans now turn to play their Alumni Game at 9 a.m. on Saturday (Nov. 5) before engaging in a nonconference clash against San Jose State at 1 p.m. on Sunday (Nov. 6) at Uytengsu Aquatics Center.
