McQuin Baron Named MPSF Tournament MVP|
Nov. 21, 2016
Following the top-ranked Trojans’ run to the 2016 MPSF Tournament Championship, USC goalie McQuin Baron has been named the MPSF Tournament MVP, joined by teammates Nick Bell and Blake Edwards on the MPSF All-Tournament Team.
At the tourney, USC added to its win streak with three decisive victories. Junior goalie McQuin Baron capped up in the cage for two of those, securing a grand total of 33 saves in his work in goal. He’d haul in 16 saves in USC’s 9-5 win over Stanford — all but sealing the Trojans’ place in the NCAA Tournament. In the championship bout against host UCLA, Baron nabbed seven saves in the first period alone, and wound up with 17 on the day to help round out a 9-6 victory and ring up the Trojans’ 10th MPSF Tournament crown. The last Trojan to be named MPSF Tournament MVP was Nikola Vavic in 2013, just before USC finished off its sixth consecutive NCAA Championship run.
USC’s lone senior Nick Bell also secured a place on the MPSF All-Tournament Team for the first time in his Trojan career. The captain delivered two key goals in the MPSF title match to help beat the Bruins and lead his team to a 12th consecutive NCAA appearance. Junior Blake Edwards also was a consistent force for the Trojans in the tourney, providing a goal in each game and joining Bell as a key leader in the pool at both ends. It’s the second appearance for Edwards on the MPSF All-Tournament Team, following up his spot on that honor roll last season.
Now 23-1 overall, the Trojans have secured the automatic berth into the 2016 NCAA Tournament, where USC will open up with a semifinal clash at 3 p.m. on Dec. 3 in Berkeley, Calif. against the victor of play-in competition. The 2016 national championship game is set for 3 p.m. on Dec. 4.
