Jan. 29, 2017
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. -- The USC women's basketball team logged its third win over a ranked team this season and pocketed a key Pac-12 upset with a decisive 65-50 win over No. 16 Arizona State today at Galen Center. The Trojans' winning weekend has USC now at 12-9 overall and 3-7 in Pac-12 play. ASU goes to 14-7, 5-5.
USC shot 39 percent from the floor in the first half while ASU hit at a 46-percent clip to help the Sun Devils to a one-point halftime advantage. In the second half, the Trojans flipped that script in a big way. USC shot 73 percent in the final 20 minutes of action to work out ahead of ASU, which shot 31 percent in the second half. For the second straight game, USC had four Trojans finish up in double figures. This time, junior Sadie Edwards led the charge with a game-high 17 points to pair well with fellow junior Kristen Simon's eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds. USC also saw senior Courtney Jaco score 11 points and freshman Minyon Moore add 10, including a momentum-shifting four-point play to close out the third quarter. ASU received 14 points from Sophie Brunner and a double-double from Quinn Dornstauder (13 points, 10 rebounds). ASU won out on the boards 30-25 but committed 18 turnovers. USC had 17 turnovers, but delivered six blocks. USC also was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free-throw line in the upset win.
The lead traded hands six times in the first half of play. The Trojans erased a six-point ASU lead during the second quarter with a 7-0 scoring run sparked by a 3-pointer from Valerie Higgins. Kristen Simon's 10th points of the half came soon after as a tug-of-war ensued between the Trojans and the Sun Devils. ASU would get the last word of the half, though, striking in the final second to sneak ahead 26-25 by the halftime buzzer.
ASU opened up the second half with a 5-0 run, forcing the Trojans to play catchup early. USC stared down that six-point deficit and got some key buckets from Edwards along with a big 3-pointer from Courtney Jaco to stay in the running. After two Edwards free throws got USC within one, down 37-36 entering the final minute of the third, Simon slipped in a score to get USC ahead 38-37. Minyon Moore would knock down a buzzer-beating 3-pointer and get fouled in the process. She'd convert, and USC gripped a 42-37 lead at the close of the third.
In the fourth, the Trojans ballooned its lead out to 11. A Jaco runner made it 55-44 with 4 minutes to go, and USC stayed the course the rest of the way. A 3-pointer from ASU with 2:00 left to play made the USC lead single digits at 59-50, but the Trojans drummed up the final six points of the game while Simon secured her eighth double-double of the season with key boards down the stretch. Simon, Ja'Tavia Tapley and Simon again made it six straight USC points to wrap the game as a 65-50 Trojan victory over the Sun Devils.
USC now turns to a road trip to the Bay Area to take on two more Pac-12 powers. The Trojans visit Stanford in a 6 p.m. game in Palo Alto on Friday (Feb. 3) before heading to Berkeley to face Cal at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday (Feb. 5).
