USC Women Secure 3-0 Start To Season With Win Over Grand Canyon|
Nov. 22, 2015
SPOKANE, WASH. -- The USC women's basketball team is off to its second 3-0 start in the past three seasons after another powerful victory today. Behind Kristen Simon's first career double-double, the Trojans topped Grand Canyon 75-44 to kick off their competition at the Naismith Memorial Hall of Fame Challenge in Spokane, Wash. USC will next face West Virginia tomorrow (Nov. 23) at 8 p.m.
USC and Grand Canyon were tied up early, but the Women of Troy methodically made scoring spurts to maneuver well out of reach of the Antelopes. USC pinned up 20 points in the first quarter and then matched that in the second to hold a 40-17 lead by halftime. The game tightened up in the second half, but USC's hefty advantage kept the Trojans in complete control. USC shot 38 percent from the floor and nailed eight 3-pointers to overmatch GCU's 26 percent shooting and single 3-pointer. USC also outrebounded the Antelopes 50-33.
USC's biggest numbers would come from the hands of sophomore Kristen Simon, who scored a career-high 21 points and a career-high 13 rebounds for the first double-double of her young Trojan career. Jordan Adams also hauled in her third straight double-digit rebounding effort of the season, notching 12 boards for the Trojan cause. On the scoring front, freshman Aliyah Mazyck had another 14-point outing, and junior Courtney Jaco also hit double figures with 11 points, thanks in part to three 3-pointers nailed in the win. Overall, every Trojan who hit the floor in this one would also score, making it 10 USC scorers in the game.
The Trojans will look to continue their winning start to 2015-16 when they clash with West Virginia tomorrow (Nov. 23) at 8 p.m. USC will then face host Gonzaga at 6 p.m. on Tuesday (Nov. 24) to wrap up the Trojans' action in Spokane.
