USC Women Rattle Off 111-95 Victory At Sacramento State|
Dec. 3, 2016
SACRAMENTO, CALIF. — The USC women’s basketball team won out in a mad scramble in Sacramento, outshooting the host Hornets in an all-out shootout for an 111-95 road win that pumps up the Trojans’ overall record to 7-1. Five Women of Troy hit double digits in the fast-paced win, led by a career-high 24 points from Aliyah Mazyck. The high-scoring affair also saw freshman Minyon Moore serve up 15 assists — second most by a Trojan in program history to stand just behind 17 tallied by Rhonda Windham back in 1982. USC’s 111 points scored also was the sixth most in program history, last hit in 1981.
The first half of action saw the Trojans rattle off 60 points — the most in a half since 1987 and the sixth most points in a half in program history. Aliyah Mazyck, Courtney Jaco and Kristen Simon all had double digits by halftime. Jaco nailed three 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes of action, which proved crucial in order for the Trojans to keep pace with the six threes landed by the Hornets in the first half. USC was shooting at a 63 percent clip by halftime to outpace Sacramento State’s 50 percent effort by the break.
In the second, USC manufactured an 11-0 lead that created some crucial padding, building out a 74-52 lead four minutes into the second half. USC’s production would cool a bit — in comparison to the heated first half — by the Trojans would finish out the game shooting 59 percent from the floor while nailing seven 3-pointers. Sacramento State, meanwhile, shot 46 percent from the floor and nailed 10 threes. The Trojans won out on the boards 39-36, with junior Simon finishing just one board away from a double-double.
Top scorer Mazyck was joined by four other Trojans in double figures, with Simon tallying 23, Courtney Jaco hitting 21 — with four 3-pointers nailed in the process — and 13 apiece from freshmen Moore and Valerie Higgins. Moore’s 13 points and 15 assists marks her second career double-double. Sacramento State was led by 21 points from Emily Eason along with 15 from Maranne Johnson and 14 from Ashlyn Crenshaw.
The Women of Troy now return to Los Angeles with five straight wins under their belts as they set up to host the Women of Troy Classic on Dec. 16 and 18 at Galen Center.
