Dec. 16, 2016
LOS ANGELES, CALIF. — The USC women’s basketball team battled it out against the Grambling State Lady Tigers to win 75-64 in the first game of the Women of Troy Classic Friday night at Galen Center. The win is USC’s sixth straight victory and improves the Women of Troy to 8-1 overall. Grambling State goes to 1-8 with the loss.
The Trojans leapt out of the gate quickly with a 10-0 run in the opening four minutes. Kristen Simon was strong the whole game, leading the team with 13 points and 12 rebounds. This marks Simon’s sixth straight game scoring in double digits, and her fifth double-double of the season. Courtney Jaco also was unstoppable tonight, scoring with 100 percent accuracy. She was 3-for-3 on 3-point attempts and racked up 11 total points for the Trojans. Minyon Moore kept the ball in the Trojans’ hands with eight total steals — the fourth most ever in a single game by a Woman of Troy.
Grambling State’s top scorer Jazmin Boyd had 19 points on the night, followed closely by Monisha Neal’s 17 points. Neal also finished up with a double-double in adding 10 rebounds to her night’s effort. Yet, by the end of the game, the field goal accuracy made the difference for the Trojans. USC shot 48 percent from the floor and 55 percent from 3-point range on a 6-for-11 effort beyond the arc. Grambling, meanwhile, was 36 percent overall and went 6-of-18 from 3-point range. USC also won out on the boards 43-33, but turned the ball over 20 times.
The first quarter ended in dramatic fashion with Alexis Lloyd sinking a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded, giving USC a 18-10 lead. The end of the second quarter saw Grambling State start to make a comeback run, as the Lady Tigers diminished USC’s 16-point lead late in the half down to a 34-26 lead at the end of the half.
Grambling State continued its comeback run into the second half, building up to a 9-0 run that made it a four-point game before Jaco hit her second 3-pointer. The fourth quarter saw Trojan freshman Dani Milisic’s first career points to help the Trojans of on a 10-2 scoring run to take control of the game and press on to victory.
The Trojans will play either No. 5 Mississippi State or SMU in the championship game on Sunday (Dec. 18) at 1 p.m. at Galen Center.
