USC incoming freshman Valerie Higgins has earned some elite status with an invitation to participate at the 2016 USA Basketball Under-18 National Team Trials in Colorado Springs, Colo., this month. One of 30 athletes on the list, Higgins is vying for a place on the 12-member roster for the U-18 squad heading to the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Championships in Chile in July.

A local product hailing from Granada Hills as a recent grad from Chaminade College Prep, the 6-0 guard is one of 16 players making their debuts at a USA Basketball national team event this week. A member of the Naismith Watch List, Higgins will enter USC as a decorated prep athlete. She recently picked up honors with selection to the Jordan Brand Classic All-American West Team, going along with her award as the SoCal Player of the Year and a spot on the All-CIF First Team. Just last month, Higgins also was named the Los Angeles Times' girls' basketball player of the year.

Higgins will now engage in action at the U18 Trials in Colorado from May 28-30. The 12-player roster for the upcoming FIBA Americas Championships will be announced on May 30.
