    Aug. 12, 2016

COSTA MASNAGA, ITALY -- The USC women's basketball team opened up competition on its foreign tour of Italy with a matchup against a German team, TK Hannover. USC put together a solid first half, but lost ground in the second to wind up with a 70-50 loss.

The Women of Troy were featuring a set of six newcomers to the court, with four true freshmen -- Minyon Moore, Ja'Tavia Tapley, Valerie Higgins and Asiah Jones -- joining forces with redshirt freshman Dani Milisic and grad transfer Ivana Jakubcova for a summertime debut as Trojans. Higgins led the group of new Trojans with six points while Moore added four. Overall, USC received a team-high 15 points from junior Kristen Simon, and fellow junior Sadie Edwards was next in line with eight for the Trojan cause.

It took a little time for the Trojans to get their feet under them in their exhibition matchup against TK Hannover, but after falling into a 9-0 hole USC got a spark from Kristen Simon with a jumper that got points on the board. She wind up providing 12 first-half points while seven other Trojans also got in on the scoring. Freshmen Minyon Moore and Val Higgins also rang up points for the Trojans, who finished off the first quarter on a 7-0 scoring run to pull USC within two of the German squad.

USC's momentum would carry through into the second frame, where Sadie Edwards opened the second quarter with a bucket to equalize things. Moments later, Alexis Lloyd delivered the go-ahead score to take the Trojans ahead 20-18 early in the second. TK Hannover would regroup soon after, however, striking out on a 9-0 scoring run to work back into the lead and stay there. Simon snuck USC within three in the final stretch, but Hannover would fend off the Trojans to tie a 34-28 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, Hannover heated up even further, while USC hit a cold patch that left the Trojans in a deepening hole. The German team pieced together an 8-0 run and closed out the frame on a 9-0 rally to lead USC 57-36 entering the fourth quarter. USC and Hannover would stay largely in stride in the final frame, rounding out a 70-50 decision in favor of TK Hannover.

The Women of Troy arrived in Italy on August 11, first exploring Milan before setting up camp at Lake Como. Today's pregame activities included a boat ride to Bellagio and to Como before regrouping for the ride to Costa Masnaga for tonight's 9 p.m. matchup against TK Hannover. The USC contingent will next venture to Venice tomorrow (August 13) and stay in Treviso for two nights as the Trojans continue their Italian adventures.
