Trojans Down Oregon State, Purdue, Advance To Gifford Great 8 Final

    The No. 2 USC women’s golf team defeated both Oregon State and Purdue in the inaugural Gifford Great 8 Collegiate Match Play on Monday (March 13) and advanced to the event’s final Tuesday morning at the Brentwood (Calif.) C.C.

    The Trojans, 8-2 last year in match play action, won their first match of the season in the morning, 3-2, over the Beavers, and followed it with a 3-1-1 victory over the Boilermakers in the afternoon.

    Senior Tiffany Chan, sophomore Robynn Ree and freshman Muni He posted USC’s three wins in both matches. Neither Chan nor Ree trailed in either match and He only briefly in her first.

    Chan posted USC’s biggest win in the semifinals, taking down Linn Andersson, 5&4. Ree defeated Michaela Farah, 3&2 and He downed Marta Martin, 2&1. Senior Gabriella Then’s match was tied through 18 holes while senior Victoria Morgan fell 3&2.

    He led the Trojans in the quarterfinal win over Oregon State with a 6&5 victory over Elyse Smidinger. Ree downed Nicole Schroeder, 4&3 while Chan defeated Hannah Swanson, 3&1. Then fell 2&1, Morgan lost 4&3.

    USC, looking for its third title this season, will play in the championships match Tuesday starting at 8:50 a.m.
