A crosstown battle on the Westside went down to the wire, but the No. 2 USC women’s golf team fell just short, falling to host UCLA, 3-2, in the title contest of the inaugural Gifford Great 8 Collegiate Match Play on Tuesday (March 14) at the Brentwood (Calif.) C.C.

The Trojans, who beat Oregon State and Purdue on Monday to advance to the title match, saw four of the five matches go the full 18 holes and all five decide by one hole or halved, but could not make up a 2-0 deficit after the first two matches.

USC trailed 2-1 after senior Tiffany Chan locked up a 1up win over UCLA’s Mariel Galdiano by winning the final two holes, but the Bruins won the tournament after the final two matches were halved between senior Victoria Morgan and Bruin Bethany Wu and sophomore Robynn Ree and Bruin Clare Legaspi.

Senior Gabriella Then dropped her match 1up to UCLA’s Lilia Vu while freshman Muni He fell to UCLA’s Erin Choi by the same score.

USC, 8-2 last year in match play action, drops to 2-1 this year, but will get more match play experience next week at the SDSU Mayhem.
