No. 1 USC Beats Northwestern, Falls To UCLA At Liz Murphey Classic

    The Trojans defeated Northwestern, 4-1, in the quarterfinals of the Liz Murphey Classic Saturday morning (April 2) but lost a tiebreaker to UCLA in the semifinals at the Georgia G.C. in Athens, Ga.

    USC, the defending champion of the event, looked to earn a spot in Sunday’s final, but lost a tight match to the Bruins on 18. The Trojans will face host Georgia in the third-place match.

    Senior Kyung Kim defeated Lydia Choi, 5&4, while freshman Robynn Ree defeated Bethany Wu, 2&1, to counter sophomore Amy Lee’s 5&4 loss to Hadas Libman and junior Tiffany Chan’s loss to Lilla Vu, 6&5.

    Behind on total holes, junior Gabriella Then needed to win her match against Bruin Louise Ridderstorm for USC to advance, but Ridderstorm’s birdie on 18 halved the match and sent UCLA to the final.

    In the Trojans win over Northwestern, Then defeated Wildcat Stephanie Lau, 4&3. Kim defeated Kacie Komoto, 3&2, while Ree downed Hannah Kim by the same score. Chan beat Sarah Cho, 2up while Lee and Suchaya Tangkamolprasert were tied after 17.
